Molly wanted to make a veggie burger that celebrates local ingredients. Wild rice is grown everywhere in Minnesota, so it’s used for a lot of things around here like hotdish, porridge and pancakes. It’s nutty, chewy and hearty, so it’s perfect as the base of a veggie burger.

Molly and her sister would get bubble tea all the time growing up in Chinatown in Chicago. She was nervous to try it at first, but was jealous that her sister got to use the big straw. That’s what got her to taste it and she ended up loving it. It’s chewy and a little sweet and fun to drink.

Struffoli is a traditional Italian Christmas treat that consists of tiny donut balls glued together with honey syrup and covered with sprinkles. Instead of that syrup Molly uses jam as a nod to inside-out sufganiyot and cake donuts; you won’t be able to stop eating these.

Wild rice grows like crazy in Minnesota, so Molly is always looking for ways to add it to recipes. It has a heartier texture but adds a really nice nuttiness when folded into light, fluffy pancake batter, and the cherry compote adds the perfect amount of tartness.

These buns have all the flavors of stollen, a German yeasted cake studded with dried fruits and citrus…in cinnamon bun form! Molly first started craving stollen while she was pregnant and would infuse its flavor into all sorts of baked goods….cookie bars, granola and now, these swirly buns—they’re perfect for a special Christmas morning breakfast!

This is a vaguely Jewish-inspired appetizer, like many dishes at Molly’s restaurant Bernie’s. It’s smoky, creamy, bright and herby and it features the wonderful whitefish of the East Grand Forks region.

Molly was inspired by Nuo Mi Ji for this recipe, which is sticky rice with a bunch of treasures, wrapped in lotus leaves and steamed. Nuo Mi Ji literally means rice with chicken, but Molly subs it for more lap cheong, a Chinese sausage, because that’s her favorite part. This is reminiscent of her grandma’s sticky rice stuffing, too.

One of my favorite parts about living in the Midwest is that if someone says they’re bringing a salad to the potluck, you never know what you’re going to get. It could be a pile of greens, it could be cold spaghetti tossed with cheese and it could be layers of crushed pretzels, sweet cream, and strawberries suspended in gelatin. This version incorporates rhubarb into the mix since it plays so well with strawberries, and wherever rhubarb goes it brings an optional (but highly encouraged) splash of rosewater for a little extra sparkle.
