Unsure of what to do with yourself during World Cup hydration breaks, when the action on the field pauses for the players to guzzle some water? For the final match in the tournament, Chipotle has an answer: Get yourself a free burrito.

The Mexican-inspired chain says it will give away $1 million worth of burritos during the hydration break during the second half of the World Cup final, which will be played by Spain and Argentina on July 19.

What is the Chipotle “Water” Break?

The Chipotle "Water" Break will offer viewers watching the match at home a chance to snag free entrees. The promotion is inspired by the ongoing conversation on social media about people who “accidentally” fill their complimentary Chipotle water cups with lemonade at the beverage station. It also builds on the success of Chipotle’s first Matchday BOGO deal in June, which the brand says became its biggest one-day promotion ever.

“This summer's tournament has also introduced Chipotle to international visitors traveling across North America, many of whom are experiencing iconic American brands and traditions for the first time,” the brand notes. “The activation gives everyone another way to celebrate the conclusion of the summer’s biggest sporting event.”

How will the Chipotle “Water” Break work?

On July 19, when the play on the field pauses for the second official hydration break of the match, Chipotle will share a video from the @Chipotle Instagram account, challenging viewers watching the game at home to track a lemonade-filled cup “as three identical Chipotle water cups shuffle across the screen,” the brand says.

When the video ends, the cup that is filled with lemonade — as opposed, presumably, to those filled with water — will reveal a “text-to-win” code. The first 100,000 people who text the code to 888-222 will win an offer for a free regular-priced entree at Chipotle. The offer will be valid until July 24, 2026.

"Our water cup has become one of the most recognizable symbols in Chipotle fan culture, and when hydration breaks emerged as a new part of the matchday experience, we saw an opportunity to bring that fan lore to life on one of the biggest stages in sports,” Stephanie Perdue, Chipotle’s senior vice president of marketing, says in a press release.
