I Tried a New Dot Cake-Inspired Chocolate Bar
The viral sensation is back in chocolate form.
The dot cake trend is back for round two. If you remember, earlier this summer, a Long Island-based bakery went viral for its signature cups of cake topped with rainbow nonpareils, with New Yorkers lining up around the block to buy them from the gourmet grocery store Butterfield Market. Internet reactions ranged from befuddled to inspired, with many making homemade dot cakes or other treats inspired by the dessert. Supermarkets started stocking sprinkles, and establishments like Shake Shack launched limited-edition dot cake-inspired menu items. Needless to say, the grip these cakes had on the food world was insane.
After a few months' reprieve from the madness, we’re back — kind of. Compartés is coming out with a dot-cake-inspired chocolate bar so we can experience the sensation in a whole new way.
What is Compartés?
Compartés is a gourmet chocolatier that makes avant-garde chocolate bars. The Dot Bar is part of Compartés’s summer lineup, along with a Dubai Pistachio Knafeh Chocolate Bar and Lemon Poppyseed Muffin Chocolate Bar. The brand also recently released a collaboration with Little Debbie.
What’s in the dot cake chocolate bar?
The Compartés Dot Bar is inspired by the viral dot cakes. According to the brand, it features, “soft vanilla cake and a confetti of sweet dots in gold, coral and deep blue, folded into creamy white chocolate.”
How can you get the dot cake chocolate bar?
The Dot Bar is available for $12 on compartes.com and at select retailers for a limited time. However, the bar has had exceptional early responses, so there's a "good chance" it will become permanent, a representative from Compartés tells Food Network.
My honest review of Compartés’s dot cake-inspired chocolate bar:
I tried the original dot cakes in June and thought they were fun, but also over-hyped: they tasted identical to grocery store cake mix and canned frosting with sprinkles on top.
On the other hand, the Compartés dot bar just tastes like white chocolate with sprinkles on top. I didn’t detect any cake flavor, nor was there cake folded into the bar. The bar also just has regular rainbow nonpareils, not the white-less rainbow ones that make the original cakes so striking. That being said, the sprinkles are still pretty and gave the bar a satisfying crunch, and the chocolate itself was tasty.
