You may never have heard of Mr. Fantasy — or you may be one of the nearly 700,000 people who follow him on TikTok. Either way, he’s coming for your Chipotle order.
The chain has just teamed up with the very peculiar viral TikTok star (more on him in a minute) to launch a new menu item based on his go-to order.
Yes, the Mr. Fantasy Burrito, a limited-time digital menu item that Chipotle says was inspired by the TikToker character’s “larger-than-life persona and love of bold flavors," is now a thing you can order at your local Chipotle.
What is the Chipotle Mr. Fantasy Burrito?
Billed as Mr. Fantasy’s “first-ever brand partnership,” which is not hard to believe, given that the character first broke into the cultural zeitgeist just last month, features carne asada, brown rice, black beans, fajita veggies, tomatillo-red chili salsa, lettuce, cheese and extra guac — all wrapped up nice and tidy in a tortilla. It’s now available at Chipotle for a limited time.
“After relocating to the U.S., Mr. Fantasy became downright feral for his go-to burrito at Chipotle, ordering it so often that staff joked he might be living on nothing else,” the brand says.
If you want to hear Mr. Fantasy mispronounce Chipotle and see him assemble his go-to burrito and then mock-lick (or really lick?) it, you can do that here.
Who is Mr. Fantasy?
He started posting content on TikTok only about a month ago and instantly went viral: His low-key yet strangely riveting first post, in which he grooves to some music alongside the caption “Hello TikTok. Hello Los Angeles. Hello world,” went up on August 19 — and has racked up 4.7 million views. His most-watched video, which defies description, has garnered 11.6 million views since it was posted on August 30. And then there’s this one, with 9.2 million views since it was posted on September 1, in which he explains that his inspiration comes “straight from the horse’s mouth, the horse being James Franco.”
Chipotle describes Mr. Fantasy, in an email, as an “enigmatic performer who’s captured TikTok with his theatrical style, cryptic videos.” True enough. But the Hollywood Reporter recently dug deeper and noted, in a funny Q&A with him, that suspicion is rife that Mr. Fantasy is actor KJ Apa obscured with a wig, false teeth and a British accent. Not to ruin the mystery or anything.
And what does Mr. Fantasy himself have to say about all this?
“When I first stumbled across Chipotle, I knew I would be changed forever. All of my favorite ingredients wrapped up in one big beefy burrito, made with all the love and kindness a man could ever need. But it’s more than just that,” he says in a statement released by Chipotle. “It’s the smiles and laughter of the staff, who pour their souls into my burrito. I am eating the love transmitted directly from their hearts. This is the nourishment I need in order to conquer my days, and I believe it is that very love that the world is searching for. So open your hearts and mouths, because the Mr. Fantasy Burrito is coming to town. I love you very much.”
And clearly, TikTok loves him back … very much.
