Popeyes has been taking a leading role in the fast food fried chicken wars the last few years, rolling out a spicy fried chicken sandwich that was so popular, it sold out at several locations. But their latest new menu items may just give Wendy’s spicy nuggets a run for their money.

In hopes that good things can also come in small packages, Popeyes is adding chicken nuggets to its menus in the mainland U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico, beginning on July 27. These new nuggets are said to be inspired by the now-legendary chicken sandwich, but in bite-sized form.

While we have not been lucky enough to have a taste just yet, they sound pretty delicious. They are hand-battered and breaded in buttermilk before being fried. They then can be paired with various dipping sauce options, including Bayou Buffalo, BoldBQ, Blackened Ranch, Buttermilk Ranch, Mardi Gras Mustard and Sweet Heat.

“Just like our game changing Chicken Sandwich, our new Chicken Nuggets are unlike anything you may have experienced before. We aim to show the world once again the magic of Popeyes® chicken with our new Nuggets. We believe that these piece(s) of crunchy, juicy delicious chicken will have guests question how they ever enjoyed chicken nuggets before this,” said Sami Siddiqui, president of Popeyes Americas, in a statement to media.

The nuggets will be available in various order sizes, going from 4-piece up to 36-piece, and for those planning a nugget party, there’ll even be 48-piece option, only available at Popeyes.com and on the Popeyes app.

Long-time Popeyes fans may remember that this isn’t the first time that nuggets appeared on the chain’s menu. However, this dish has been out of the permanent menu lineup since 2012 and has only made brief regional reappearances since. They also did a limited-edition popcorn chicken rollout in 2017.

But in this day and age of the fried chicken wars never seeming to slow down, and Popeyes eager to hold their spot at the top of the heap, the world seems rather ripe for a new nugget in town.
