If you’ve ever reached in to grab a snack from your silicone bag and been hit with the unpleasant taste of soap, you’re not alone. It’s a common issue for many silicone kitchen product owners (including us!) – so we had to get to the bottom of it.

We reached out to a variety of customer service departments from some of our go-to products, including Silpat, Stasher and OXO. Here’s what we learned about why silicone products can start tasting like soap and what you can do about it.

Why Silicone Can Start Tasting Like Soap

It’s likely that if you’re getting a soapy taste from your silicone product, it’s because of the dish detergent or soap that you’re using. Strong dish detergents and soaps are often absorbed into silicone and can affect the taste of whatever you are storing.

How to Avoid the Soapy Taste

According to Silpat, using a detergent with a neutral pH will help prevent this problem from happening. Stay away from strong dish soaps like ones that have essential oils in them. Stasher advises that using Cascade soap is often one of the main causes of this issue.

How to Get Rid of the Soapy Taste in Silicone

OXO recommends that you dampen your silicone product with water and scrub a generous amount of baking soda onto the product to form a paste. Then, leave the paste to dry and rinse the product with hot water a few hours later.

Stasher recommends filling the inside of your silicone bag with a solution of 1/4-cup vinegar, one to two tablespoons of salt and 1/2-cup of hot tap water. Close the bag and carefully give it a shake. Let it sit for more than an hour and then wash the bag with soap and water. Alternatively, Stasher says that you can bake your Stasher bag on an oven-safe pan at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for around 20 minutes and allow your bag to cool (make sure that the bag isn’t touching the sides or top of the oven).
