Make the simple syrup: Bring the sugar and 1/2 cup water to a boil in a saucepan, stirring to dissolve. Let cool completely; store in the refrigerator.
Make the cocktail: Finely crush the freeze-dried berries and mix with the sugar and 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt. Moisten the rim of a glass with water, then dip in the berry salt. Fill the glass with ice.
Combine the Mezquila, Cointreau, lime juice, strawberry puree and simple syrup in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake until very cold, 10 to 15 seconds.
Strain the drink into the glass and garnish with the strawberry slice.
