Dan Langan — who started baking at the tender age of 5 — is living the sweet life as a cake decorator and sugar art instructor. When the self-taught baker and "Cake Wars" contestant (turned judge) isn't making whimsical custom cakes for his Baked By Dan clients or creating over-the-top pieces of edible art live for Food Network, you'll find him getting creative in the kitchen for his latest series, "Dan Can Bake It."
In this first competition of the celebrity tournament, fans of Food Network and Cooking Channel get to see some of their favorite stars in action in the Chopped Kitchen. One chef's dash to deliver a creative appetizer before the clock runs makes for a very exciting first round. Then in the second round, something's fishy in the basket, and one chef's dish is at risk when two competitors bump into each other. And with a spot in the $50,000 All-Stars finale and a favorite charity on the line, two finalists go head-to-head in the dessert round. Will their creations from marshmallow and coconut flakes make the judges happy?
Celebrating the trendy tradition of hosting a Friendsgiving meal, four teams of best buddies compete to make a Thanksgiving feast. Cooperation will be key as good pals set out to show that their bonds can withstand the pressure that comes from one of the toughest cooking competitions around. Mayhem ensues with eight chefs in the kitchen in the first round, as everyone tries to make the most of an iffy canned product. A thematically appropriate and totally weird hot dog is part of the entrée round puzzle, and a pumpkin pie-flavored drink in the dessert basket is a sweet surprise for the two remaining teams of friends.
Winners of the hit series Food Network Star compete to see who can beam brightest in the Chopped Kitchen! Cooking for the powerhouse panel of Bobby Flay, Giada De Laurentiis and Alton Brown, the competitors must be ready for whatever they might find in the notorious baskets, if they want to win $10,000 for their charity. It is a bubbly first round with sparkling cider as a mystery ingredient. Then a black cloud hovers over the entree round, in the form of black chickens. In the dessert round, it all comes down to which Star crafts the better dessert from frozen peas and cinnamon cereal.
The final two recruits face their toughest challenge yet: to prepare a three-course meal in a real restaurant kitchen for a panel of demanding gourmands. Chefs Anne and Robert devise a menu, send the recruits shopping for ingredients, and then help their recruit practice the menu for three short hours. The next day, the recruits find themselves at New York's famed Tribeca Grill, where they must cook for three culinary experts: Marc Murphy, Donatella Arpaia, and Drew Nieporent. After much deliberation, the panel reveals its choice for the best-executed meal. The winner receives $25,000 and bragging rights that they are no longer one of the Worst Cooks in America.
Embracing the idea of less is more, Alton Brown puts the creativity of the remaining chefs to the test by having them pare down their ingredients. In a Chairman's Challenge twist, one competitor will be eliminated on the spot after the tasting. The least successful dish sends one chef out of the kitchen, and only the final two Iron Chef hopefuls are left standing. The Secret Ingredient Showdown reveals an altar that takes the chefs back to where it all began, and judges Iron Chef Alex Guarnaschelli and Ching-He Huang determine which elite competitor moves forward to the finale to run the gauntlet and potentially join the ranks of Iron Chef.
From breakfast to dinner (and all the meals and snacks in between), these easy recipes are perfect for kids who are ready to get their hands dirty in the kitchen — with a little bit of grown-up supervision, of course!
