The Only Thing Better Than Sleeping in Your Own Bed Is Sleeping in a Tequila Barrel
You’re almost guaranteed to have sweet, agave-scented dreams.
It’s hard to imagine "sleep in a massive tequila barrel" is on a lot of our bucket lists, but that hasn’t stopped a hotel in Mexico from giving us all the chance to cross it off.
The Matices Hotel de Barricas in the agave fields of Casa Cofradia in Tequila, Jalisco, Mexico, bills itself on its Facebook page as "the only hotel in a tequila factory and with barrel-shaped rooms surrounded by an agave field" (in case you wondered if there were others).
Each of the resort’s standalone, air-conditioned barrel-shaped rooms is decorated with its own distinct mural and spacious enough to accommodate a king-sized bed and rain-shower-equipped bathroom. Large windows let the light in and provide a view of the agave fields, which can also be enjoyed from a patio outside each barrel/room.
The tequila theme is not confined to the rooms, but rather integrated into guests’ experience with the opportunity to enjoy distillery tours, harvest agave, distill your own tequila and, of course, taste locally produced tequilas – including, according to Supercall, Casa Noble, Agave Loco and Astral -- at the resort’s bar and restaurant.
Average pricing for the rooms is currently around $161 online. While some reviewers on Trip Advisor have griped about spotty WiFi, so-so breakfasts or kitch factor, others rave about the adventure of it all.
"Matices Hotel de Barricas is the ultimate tequila experience," wrote one enthusiastic reviewer. "Is it a hotel with a distillery or a distillery with a hotel? Actually, it doesn’t matter; they are just so passionate about the tequila culture! … Without any doubt, one of the most original places I have ever stayed."
Plus, it’ll make crossing off at least one bucket-list item as easy as shooting fish in a tequila barrel.
