Costco Smoked Salmon Recall Raised to Highest Risk Level

Costco Smoked Salmon fans, check your fridges — or at this point, more likely your freezers. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has boosted the risk level of a recall of Costco’s Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon — the kind sold in twin 12-ounce packages — to Class I, indicating that the risk of the recalled product’s potential danger to your health is very high.
A Class I recall, the agency’s highest risk level, constitutes a "situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death," according to the FDA.
The recall was first issued on October 25, 2024, Acme Smoked Fish Corporation of Brooklyn, New York, which packaged the smoked salmon sold under the Kirkland Signature label, after lab testing confirmed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in some product.

The recall pertains to 111 cases of Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon sold in twin 12-ounce packages ("vacuum packed in a black bordered plastic package, with a blue name of 'Smoked Salmon' and an illustration of a salmon fish on the front," as described in the recall) with labels indicating the following information: UPC 0 96619 25697 6, Lot# 8512801270, Best-by-Date 11/13/2024.
The recalled cases were distributed to Florida between October 9 and October 13, 2024. There is concern that some customers may have frozen the smoked salmon for later use.
For healthy people, Listeria monocytogenes may cause symptoms including fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, and diarrhea and abdominal pain, which often pass without complication. The risks are much higher for young children, elderly people and those with weakened immune systems; in those cases infections may be severe or even fatal. And for pregnant women, infection raises the risk of miscarriage and stillbirth.
While no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall thus far, those who find themselves in possession of the recalled smoked salmon are urged not to eat it and to either throw it away or return it wherever it was purchased.
