Better head to the pantry for a chip check. And that directive is more urgent than it previously may have seemed. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has boosted to the highest level a recall of Lay’s potato chips that was originally issued in December.
Frito-Lay initially issued a recall of a limited number of 13-ounce (368.5 grams) packages of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips (the kind in the familiar yellow bag) in December due to concerns that they may contain “undeclared milk ingredients.” The fear was that people with milk allergies or severe milk sensitivity could face serious or even life-endangering allergic reactions to the chips if they ate them.
The recalled chips were sent to retail stores and online distributors in Oregon and Washington.
Bags subject to recall are described by the FDA as “flexible” and feature a “Guaranteed Fresh” date of 11 FEB 2025 and “Manufacturing codes” of either “6462307xx” or “6463307xx.” The UPC code of the recalled chips is 28400 31041. An estimated 6,000 bags, which could have been purchased as early as November 3, 2024, were subject to recall.
“No other Lay’s products, flavors, sizes or variety packs are recalled,” Lay’s said in a recall announcement.
Although the recalled chips have presumably been removed from most, if not all, store shelves since the recall was announced in mid-December, there is concern that they could still be in consumers’ homes.
The FDA raised the recall to a “Class I” hazard level on January 27. That classification is defined by the agency as “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”
While no allergic reactions to the recalled chips have been reported so far, anyone who has an allergy or sensitivity to milk is urged not to consume the recalled chips. If you have the recalled chips or questions about them, Frito-Lay Consumer Relations can be reached at 1-800-352-4477.
