It’s About Time This Beloved Doughnut Chain Released Apple Cider Doughnuts

There are three different kinds to choose from and even more fall flavors to come.

As soon as there’s any hint of a chill in the air, it’s hard not to find any one of the hundreds of pumpkin spice products in the supermarket or on restaurant menus — be it a latte, a box of cookies, or yes, even glazed turkey. However, Krispy Kreme opted to expand beyond the traditional fall flavor this year with the release of a trio of apple cider-glazed treats.

From September 13-19, the North Carolina-based chain will be selling three doughnuts as part of its all-new apple cider glazed collection. The distinct doughnuts in the line are the Apple Cider Glazed, the Apple Cider Glazed Original Filled Brown Sugar Kreme and the Apple Cider Glazed Cake Doughnut.

As you may have guessed, the Apple Cider Glazed Doughnut is simply covered in a special new glaze. This fall topping, a first for Krispy Kreme, is made with real apple cider and an array of warm spices. The filled version features light and fluffy Brown Sugar Kreme running through the center of the fried treat, while the Apple Cider Cake Doughnut is an apple cider old-fashioned cake doughnut covered in that same delectable cider glaze.

This apple cider threesome is actually part of a larger Krispy Kreme initiative for the new season dubbed “Fall for Glaze” in which one fall-inspired glaze collection is released each week. The campaign actually kicked off on Labor Day when the pumpkin spice doughnut collection returned, and it will conclude next week when another new range — the maple glazed collection — debuts and is available from September 20-26.

Similar to the apple cider group, the maple trio is slated to consist of a Maple Glazed Doughnut covered in a glaze made with real syrup, an Original Filled Maple Kreme Doughnut packed with Maple Kreme and a Maple Glazed Cake Doughnut made with an old-fashioned yellow butter cake batter.

According to a press release, Krispy Kreme wanted to release two all-new fall varieties to show that there’s more to the season than an onslaught of pumpkin-spice flavored items. “Pumpkin Spice is great, but why stop there when there are so many more flavors to fall. To help everyone truly embrace the tastes of the season, we’re adding two first-ever fall-inspired glazes with our popular Pumpkin Spice collection – each getting their own week this month,” Dave Skena, Chief Marketing Officer for Krispy Kreme, said in a statement.

However, despite a concerted effort to include new flavors in the fall lineup, pumpkin spice still reigns supreme. While the apple cider and maple doughnuts will be around for a week a piece, Krispy Kreme’s Pumpkin Spice Cake Doughnut and Pumpkin Spice Latte will be available through November 25.

Still, Krispy Kreme isn’t the only brand that got on the apple train this year. Last month, Starbucks debuted a brand new drink called the Apple Crisp Macchiato, which is currently available hot or iced. The caffeinated beverage (which arrived the day after the PSL made its triumphant return) is made with steamed milk and “marked” with Starbucks’ signature espresso. It sports a caramelized-spiced-apple drizzle that’s really, really tasty.
