Little Caesars Brings Us a Pizza-Calzone Mashup That Looks, Er, Interesting

The new Crazy Calzony is definitely extra — and means you won’t have to choose between pizza or calzones.

The world may not have been begging for a freaky-looking pizza-calzone mashup, but now that it’s here we may wonder why it was never in our lives before.

Little Caesars has just introduced a new pizza-calzone hybrid called the Crazy Calzony, and while it looks like … well, like no food we’ve ever seen before, it really might become our newest pizza-night addiction.

The Crazy Calzony became available at all Little Caesars nationwide via online pre-order on August 16 for $8.49 and will be available for walk-in (a.k.a. “HOT-N-READY”) orders between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. starting on August 23, for a limited time only.

It’s basically a pepperoni pizza in the middle, punctuated by four calzone sections — to make kind of a plus shape overall. (A suitable shape because it’s really so extra.) The calzone sections are made by folding the crust and stuffing them with garlic white sauce, mozzarella cheese, julienned pepperoni and a sprinkle of parmesan cheese.

The whole thing comes with a Crazy Sauce for dipping, although, when we got an early taste of the new menu item, the sauce was left out of the box and we didn’t miss it at all.

The Crazy Calzony, which is divided into eight pizza-calzone hybrid sections, is also available in a cheese version. (Hold the pepperoni.) That’s the one we tried — and enjoyed.

To me and my fellow tasters, the crust around the calzone parts tasted thick and salty — almost pretzel-like. (One member of my tasting party thought it was too salty, but I'm a salt fiend so I ate it up.) We all enjoyed having both the pizza sensation (with sauce) and the calzone sensation (the garlicky, gooey cheesiness!) in one.

Jeff Klein, chief marketing officer at Little Caesars, said the new menu item was months in the making and that he was “eager for customers to finally get the chance to taste the cheesy goodness of one of our most exciting products yet.”

The Crazy Calzony is indulgent, innovative and, OK, sure, maybe a little out-there. (Thus the name, presumably.) But it seems like it would be a good option for those nights when you and your crew can't totally agree on whether to order pizza or calzones, which actually often happens in my house.

I'm a calzone girl in a pizza world. But now no one has to choose!
