Is Butter or Mayo Better on Grilled Cheese? A New Condiment May Finally Put the Debate To Rest
Say hello to ‘Butternaise.’

Which is better on grilled cheese sandwiches: butter or mayo? Yes, on the outside of the bread before you put it in the pan to brown up and get the cheese all melty.
Apparently that question is a subject of hot debate on TikTok. (See here, here and here.) But now, you don’t have to choose a side.
Tillamook County Creamery Association, the farming coop behind Tillamook butter, cheeses and other dairy products, and Kewpie, the Japanese mayonnaise brand that is a cult-hit favorite in U.S., have teamed up to an argument-ending new condiment: “Butternaise.”
The limited-edition new product is being billed as the “first-of-its-kind spread made specifically to create perfectly crusted grilled cheese sandwiches.”
Which kind of sounds like the best thing to hit grilled cheese sandwiches since sliced bread.
What is Butternaise?
It’s pretty much what it sounds like. Butternaise is a mashup — sorry, an “artful blend,” in the brands’ terminology — of Tillamook Extra Creamy Unsalted Butter and Kewpie Organic Mayonnaise, along with some “zesty” spices.
“This silky spread is meant to be liberally lathered all over the bread of your choosing to create the perfect golden crust on your grilled cheese sandwich masterpiece,” Tillamook says in a press release, adding that Butternaise is the “crossover you never knew you needed but won’t be able to live without.”
Where can you buy Butternaise?
The new grilled-cheese-friendly condiment drops Thursday, November 6, and will be available only while supplies last. You can buy it exclusively online, at shop.tillamook.com, where it is being sold in an 8-ounce jar as part of a limited-edition kit that also includes two packs of Tillamook cheese slices (one medium white cheddar and one sharp cheddar) and one spreader. The attractive boxed kit is priced at $15 and can be shipped nationwide.
