Directions
Special equipment:
blender, hand mixer
For the garnish: Place the vanilla wafers in a resealable plastic bag and finely crush using a rolling pin or your hands. (You can also use a food processor for this.)
Place the vanilla wafers in a rimmed plate. Next to the plate, place the caramel sauce in a bowl.
Gently dip the top of each of two milkshake glasses into the caramel sauce lightly, then dredge in the vanilla wafers to coat, making a rim. Set aside. You can also chill the glasses for a couple of minutes in the freezer here for the caramel to set.
To make the whipped cream, in a chilled bowl, add the heavy cream, sugar and vanilla extract and whisk using a hand mixer until light and fluffy and medium-stiff peaks form, about 5 minutes. Keep in the fridge until ready to serve.
For the banana milkshake: Break the overripe banana into pieces and add to a blender with the milk and caramel sauce. Blend until very smooth.
Add the vanilla ice cream and blend again until thick and combined. You may need to stir in between blending; this milkshake should be pretty thick!
Drizzle the insides of the chilled milkshake glasses with more caramel sauce. Evenly pour the milkshake between the two glasses.
Garnish with a large dollop of the whipped cream, a sprinkle of vanilla wafers, some caramel sauce and a slice or two of banana.
