Besides my cast-iron skillet, I love using a mason jar. Here, it's the perfect vessel for making a prep-ahead salad. I fill the bottom with the vinaigrette, then top with hearty greens, sliced plums, crispy roasted chickpeas and almonds, and then wait to shake it until right before I'm ready to eat.

Sweet bread is a dessert my grandmother often had growing up. Back then they didn't have much, so meals and desserts were made with what they had on hand. I like to top the sweet bread with pineapple jam as a nod to Charleston, since the pineapple is the symbol of hospitality and is associated with the city.

These Korean-inspired short ribs are just the right combination of salty and sweet. Ask your butcher to cut the short ribs "flanken-style" if you don't see this thin-cut rib in the case of the meat department.

These sweet little nuggets of goodness are the perfect bread to serve with your meal. I especially love them with my Brisket and Bean Chili, but give them a try with other soups too. The creamed corn adds another layer of sweetness and a slight crunch from the corn in each bite.

These sweet potato chips have the perfect blend of salty and savory. And when they're served with my sweet and spicy mustard sauce...goodness, they're downright amazing. The sauce is also great on chicken fingers and sandwiches, so I recommend keeping some in your fridge at all times.

This ode to the New Orleans classic dessert features plantains instead of bananas. I love the change up, highlighting this important fruit from the African diaspora. I also find that the texture of the plantain slices holds up better than bananas, instead of turning to mush.

Once when I had leftover sweet potato pie filling, I wondered what I could do with it. Y'all know I don't like to waste food! So, I thought it would be fun to combine two of my favorite things: cornbread and sweet potato pie. The filling gets swirled into the cornbread batter for a sweet and savory mashup that everyone is sure to love.

What's my secret for super-crispy sweet potato fries? I actually have two. First, I soak the potatoes in cold water to remove the excess starch. Then, I give them a toss in a cornstarch and seltzer water mixture. The cherry on top? I dust these with a spicy-sweet spice blend and serve them with two different awesome sauces. Bet you can't eat just one!
