'Girl Meets Farm' Celebrates Molly Yeh and Her Husband's 10-Year Wedding Anniversary

Living on a fifth-generation sugar beet farm in Minnesota, married to a farmer and working as a TV host, restaurateur, chef and cookbook author did not seem to be in the cards for Molly Yeh. She grew up studying music seriously enough that after high school, she moved to New York City to train at Juilliard. Years later, she eventually found herself at a party chatting with a fellow Juilliard music school alum named Nick with a sugar beet tattoo, who she recollects had “no game in talking to girls” in her latest cookbook, Sweet Farm.

How a Girl on a Farm Came to Be

After that brief exchange followed by a successful first date merely two weeks later, Molly and Nick realized they were “actually destined to get married.” Turns out Nick had some game after all!

After years of dating, the couple decided to leave New York for Minnesota so that Nick could carry on his family’s business of farming wheat and sugar beets, a lesser-known plant that produces half of the country’s sugar. Molly, a self-proclaimed baking aficionado and sugar addict, was excited to settle down in a quiet place that allowed her to further her passion for food and food writing. It was then that the shared life of a sugar farmer and a sugar-obsessed baker was born.

The Sweet Life on a Sugar Beet Farm

It wasn’t long before Nick proposed while the couple was vacationing in California and Molly began planning the sweetest winter wedding you ever did see. With guests wrapped in stylish blankets and fur stoles and groomsmen sporting burlap-wrapped rosemary boutonnieres, Molly and Nick were married on December 27, 2014, under a handmade chuppah inside the oldest building on the family’s farm.

In the 10 years since, Molly and Nick have been hard at work. Molly's show Girl Meets Farm is in its 15th (!!) season, she released her fourth cookbook and she and Nick co-own and operate Bernie’s, a cafe and bakery in their East Grand Forks, Minnesota, town. They are also the proud parents of their two little girls, Bernie and Ira.

A 10th-Anniversary Menu Made With Love

To celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary, Molly dedicates an entire episode on this season of Girl Meets Farm to her husband, Nick, curating a menu made especially for him. And if this menu isn’t the secret to marital success, then I don’t know what is!

As a nod to their first date, a beach picnic complete with croissants, Molly whips up a prosciutto Swiss croissant strata that she describes as exploding “with layers of melty, cheesy, meaty goodness, just like our marriage.” Not only does this recipe look like a total crowd-pleaser, but it has some good ol’ Midwestern sensibility baked right in to it, as Molly recommends using day-old bread (in this case, croissants), explaining that, “You want them to be a little bit dried out so that they actually have more room to absorb more flavor.”

For a side dish, Molly makes loaded avocado hash browns topped with a homemade salsa macha. This dish is inspired by what Molly refers to as “Nick’s second dinners,” which he was fond of making when they were first dating. She explains that his tastes were “quirky” back then and included combining two of his favorite foods … avocados and peanut butter. “That’s kind of weird, right?” she ponders. Though this question was likely rhetorical, as an ode to his unconventional food pairings, Molly makes hash browns topped with perfectly ripe avocado and drizzled with salsa macha that’s made with, you guessed it, peanuts. That’s true love right there, folks. Or, as Molly says, ”It’s a macha made in heaven.”

Of course, no wedding anniversary celebration would be complete without dessert and a toast to the happy couple. Calling Nick “the peanut butter to my jelly,” Molly bakes peanut butter and raspberry jelly blondies that are perfectly chewy and dense, thanks to the addition of whole-wheat flour. She tops them off with heart-shaped sprinkles (of course!).

They’ll toast to this momentous 10-year mark with creamy fruit salad cocktails. And while these cocktails are really pushing the whole concept of "salad" with the addition of creamy coconut milk and aquavit (a gin-like liquor made from potatoes or wheat) we are totally here for it.
