Molly is more of a cake person, but this pie is an exception because it’s heavy on crust, her favorite part of any pie. This recipe has a blueberry jam-like filling with a barrier of speculoos spread (basically melted gingerbread) to prevent the crust from sogging — it’s thick and it’s fantastic.

This barbecue brisket is inspired by my mom's brisket, which is a classic Jewish-style red-wine-braised situation. The sauce combines flavors from my favorite barbecue sauce (heavy on the sweetness!) and my mom's braise, whose acidity balances the sweetness for a next-level sandwich. The caraway in the coleslaw is a nod to the caraway-flecked rye bread that's a staple at Jewish delis and I just love the woodsy depth that it lends.

This idea came about when Molly experienced a grilled cheese with a lot of kale in it which seemed like a fun new way to shovel kale into her mouth. It has crispy sourdough, salty meat, creamy white beans, and hearty vegetable. It’s a delicious combination of flavors and it can be made in a flash!

During Passover, we avoid leavened bread, but I wanted to top this spring salad with a carby crouton-like element, so these popovers were born…out of matzo meal and the secret weapon, schmaltz, aka chicken fat, aka liquid gold. They burst with savory chicken flavor and pop up beautifully.

Pastrami on rye is the ultimate classic Jewish deli sandwich that I loved eating late at night at Katz's when I lived in New York. Pastrami is made from either the deckel, navel, or brisket cut of beef, and is brined, smoked, and steamed, which infuses it with sooo much addictive flavor. In this version I topped mine with onion rings because YOLO. They add crunch and sweetness too.

A smorgastarta is a savory, Swedish sandwich cake that’s made with sandwich fillings and bread of your choice, and it is constructed just like a sweet layer cake. Molly’s version has layers of Pullman bread stacked up with egg salad and salmon salad between them with the whole thing covered in a smooth cream cheese topping and colorful fresh decor. She’s obsessed with this entire concept.

Molly thinks s’mores are the best! This is her campfire twist on the classic Midwestern sweet snack mix with loads of marshmallows, graham crackers and corn cereal tossed together with peanut butter and chocolate…and enough powdered sugar to keep the sugar farmers in business! It’s soooo good; she used to eat tons of it as a kid at soccer practice!
