Cheez-Its Are Getting a Puffy Makeover

The world has a lot of cheese snacks. Still, you could argue that the world doesn’t have enough of them. For those who would, Cheez-It has happy news. The brand is introducing a new line of snacks called Cheez-It Puff’d.
The new “cheesy, airy & puffy” take on the iconic Cheez-It cracker is “baked with 100% real cheese inside and out,” according to the product packaging. (Like chips, the snack comes in bags — 5.75 ounces each — rather than in boxes.) It hits retail shelves nationwide in February and will be available in three flavors already familiar to Cheez-It fans: Double Cheese, White Cheddar and Scorchin’ Hot Cheddar.
“Cheez-It Puff’d starts with a crunchy outside layer and transforms into a melt-in-your-mouth, indulgent taste for an absurdly uplifting snacking experience fit for the whole family,” the brand boasts.
We got an advance taste of all three flavors, and found them tasty for sure. Bite-size and square, with a divot in the center, like the crackers that inspired them, they have the crunchy-spongy cheese-dusted consistency of your basic cheese puff.
The “Double Cheese” flavor was the most subtle, similar in color and vibe to classic Cheez-It crackers. The “White Cheddar” had a pleasant extra-sharp tang. And the “Scorchin’ Hot Cheddar” bites were the stealthiest — starting relatively mild, getting more fiery as you chew and ending up with a surprising degree of heat.
Overall, the Cheez-It Puff’d snacks were remarkably satisfying, even though a generous portion of 40 pieces clocks in at only 150 calories. If we were to quibble, we might note that, in addition to sticking to your ribs, the puffs have a tendency to stick to your teeth, which can make snack time last a bit longer than anticipated. Given the cheese dust factor, you’ll also want to keep a napkin handy.
“We know families are constantly seeking new ways to boost snacktime and afternoon fun, and Cheez-It Puff’d delivers just that,” Erin Storm, senior marketing director of Cheez-It, said in a news release. “This puffy and airy Cheez-It transformation is the perfect way to unlock a surprisingly uplifting snacktime experience the whole family is sure to enjoy.”
And couldn’t most of us use an “uplifting snacktime experience” these days?
