Cup Noodles have long been known as that affordable container of noodles you can stash in a cabinet or a desk drawer and just add hot water to when you are ready for a quick, satisfying lunch. But like many of us, they are now celebrating a big birthday by making a big lifestyle change.
The line is turning 50 this year, and part of the celebration is the launch of Cup Noodles Stir Fry Rice With Noodles, which is a fun fusion of instant noodles and rice, available in flavors like Japanese Teriyaki Chicken, Korean Spicy Beef and Thai Yellow Curry.
“To celebrate Cup Noodles’ 50th anniversary this year, we’re paying homage to our founder Momofuku Ando’s spirit of innovation by boldly going where no Cup Noodles has gone before – stir fry rice with noodles,” said Jaclyn Park, Vice President, Marketing, Nissin Foods USA, in a press release. “You heard it here first – we're no longer just a noodle company. Some may think we’ve gone too far, but mark our words – rice and noodles were just meant to be together.”
Although this is a new direction for the noodle-centric brand, the Stir Fry Rice With Noodles is made in very much the same way as the traditional version – just add water to the fill line and microwave for a few minutes. Then, give it a stir and then let it rest until ready to eat.
Food Network had the opportunity to try this rice and noodles mashup and the taste is very similar to taking a few takeout containers and mixing them around on your plate. While carbo-loading with a mix of mini bites of noodles and rice in the same plate may sound like a bit much, it tends to be the direction we take our takeout food orders. The cup still does have a slightly soupy texture, and the seasoning is rather subtle, but it absolutely fills that savory comfort food need on a chilly rainy night.
The Cup Noodles Stir Fry Rice With Noodles is available at select Walmarts nationwide for $1.27.
