Hostess Ding Dongs Recalled Due to Mold

Check your lunchboxes, backpacks, pantry shelves and secret snack stashes: There’s a new recall out for a popular Hostess product. And it’s for kind of a gross reason: the possible presence of mold.
On Wednesday, August 20, the J. M. Smucker Co. announced that it is withdrawing some lots of Hostess Ding Dongs over concerns that they may contain mold — and that it is working with regulators “to make them aware of the issue and to ensure appropriate oversight.”
The lots of Hostess Ding Dongs subject to the recall were sold across the United States.
“Our root cause investigation confirmed a mechanical issue with a piece of equipment created conditions that could support the development of mold in the product prior to the expiration date,” the company said in its announcement. “This mechanical issue was present for a limited period and resolved in a timely manner.”
The recalled lots are Hostess Chocolate Ding Dong Single Serve two-count packs (UPC: 8-88109-01002), Hostess Chocolate Ding Dong 10-count packs (UPC: 8-88109-11061) and Hostess Chocolate Ding Dong Family Pack 16-count packs (UPC: 8-88109-11092) — all with the following Best By Dates: August 30, 2025; August 31, 2025; September 1, 2025; September 2, 2025; and September 3, 2025.
The company credits its own quick action for the fact that lots only from those five dates were affected. No other Hostess or J.M. Smucker Co. products are implicated in the recall, it says.
Although, due to their “Best By Dates,” the recalled products are nearing the end of their shelf life, the company said in its announcement, “due to the potential presence of mold,” it is taking steps to withdraw them from store and customer shelves nonetheless.
Anyone who has the recalled Ding Dongs is urged not to consume them and to rather return them to the place of purchase for a refund or a replacement.
