Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream has just announced that the ice cream flavor once heard around the world, its Everything Bagel, will be back in our freezer aisles starting in March. The inventive pint, which mixes a cream cheese ice cream base with real sesame, onion and poppy seed “gravel,” garnered both massive praise and understandable skepticism. Now, Jeni’s is ready to bring the flavor back.
The Ohio-based ice cream shop has been known for its unique flavors, from Coffee with Cream and Sugar to Middle West Whiskey and Peanuts. But when its Everything Bagel Ice Cream first hit the scene in 2014, it was received with little fanfare. However, it slowly picked up steam and soon became one of Jeni’s most talked about flavors.
While some tried it and loved it, some stayed as far away from it as they possibly could – but they all had something to say about it. Then, seemingly as quickly as it went, Everything Bagel Ice Cream vanished, but people’s curiosity did not.
For anyone wondering, we’re fans of the flavor ourselves. As writer Samantha Leffler put it, one of the most enticing things about it is how it manages to strike a “practically perfect” balance between savory and sweet. Much like getting just the right ratio of bagel to schmear, Jeni’s has finely calibrated the amount of cream cheese ice cream to savory seasonings. “Instead of feeling like an intrusion into what is a very respectable cream cheese ice cream in its own right, the onions and garlic felt like a welcome addition,” said Leffler.
But don’t take our word for it. Luckily, you’ll be able to form your own opinion on the controversial ice cream starting on March 21. Pints will be back on sale online and in-stores.
