Popeyes is known for having great chicken (remember when it led the chicken sandwich wars?). And this tailgate season, the chain is going back to the basics and offering a revamp of the wings that have long been at the forefront of its menu.

This relaunch is all about choosing your own adventure, as the newly revamped options (available now nationwide), feature a mild marinated base, so customers can choose from there just how spicy and flavorful they want to go.

Some favorite flavors will be returning, along with some new offerings. Signature Hot, Sweet ‘N Spicy and Honey BBQ will be returning, while dry rubs Ghost Pepper, Lemon Pepper, Garlic Parm and Buffalo are brand new on the menu.

What’s great about this lineup is there’s something for everyone, whether you want to pack on the heat with Ghost Pepper or go for a more traditional Buffalo.

In general, I’m way more into dry rubs than saucy wings; it’s just my personal preference. So, when Popeyes sent an assortment of their newly revamped wing menu to try, it wasn’t surprising to me that it was the dry rub wings that were my favorite by a mile. While Ghost Pepper packed some serious kick, I also really enjoyed the classic Buffalo – and the Garlic Parm, a flavor I don’t generally gravitate toward. It was surprisingly flavorful and I’m saving leftovers to enjoy shredded over a Caesar salad for dinner tonight. It feels like it’ll be a great companion. As for the saucy side of things, I’m still a Signature Hot girl forever and always (and it’s so good when dipped in the mashed potatoes and gravy!).

As the wings are being relaunched just in time for tailgating season (I’m sure that’s totally just a coincidence) Popeyes is partnering quarterback Baker Mayfield for a “Better Wings, Better Mayfield” campaign. Beginning September 4, when Baker scores, get free wings the Monday after each touchdown in the form of a free 6-piece Wings with any $10+ digital order.

“I’ve been a fan of Popeyes for a long time, so teaming up for the ‘Better Wings, Better Mayfield’ campaign was a no-brainer,” says Baker Mayfield in a statement to the media. “We had a blast recreating some of my old moves, celebrating comebacks and diving into these new wings. Popeyes leveled up their wings, and now fans can level up their game days too — with free wings every time I score a touchdown. Better wings, better gamedays and a better me. That’s a win for everyone this football season.”
