There are two things people love to discuss on TikTok: upgrading soda and consuming more protein. It was only a matter of time before the trends joined forces.

Dirty soda, the combination of soda, fruit-flavored syrups and cream, has been a part of Utah culture for years. The drink likely originated as a pick-me-up for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons), who are not permitted to consume hot caffeinated beverages such as tea or coffee. Regional dirty soda chains such as Swig and Sodalicious, which have been around for over a decade, offer tons of dirty soda combinations.

Thanks to social media, dirty soda has caught on outside of Utah. Earlier this year, Coffee Mate sold a limited-edition creamer nationwide that was specifically designed for Dr Pepper.

Now, a new twist on the drink is emerging: protein dirty soda. Instead of using half-and-half or non-dairy cream, people are mixing their sodas with protein shakes. Two birds with one stone. And apparently, they taste amazing.

Registered dietitian Abbey Sharp tried a protein Diet Coke in her own video, which she captioned, “I’m actually shocked by how much I liked this…”

“This tastes like a float, like an ice cream float!” she says. “Mormon moms, you know what you’re doing.”

Janelle Rohner made an orange creamsicle version with orange soda and a vanilla protein shake.

“The root beer one was amazing, that might be my number one, but orange creamsicle is a close second,” she says. “If you struggle to get enough protein, you gotta try these. These are absolutely delicious. They taste like ice cream floats.”

So, if you’re looking to get more protein to your diet, this is a fun way to do it.
