You could argue that the beverage with which Beyonce is most closely associated is lemonade. Now, though, she’s swerving into whisky.
Beyoncé Knowles-Carter is teaming up with liquor brand Moët Hennessy to launch her own American whisky, SirDavis. It turns out the music superstar has long been a fan of Japanese whisky and approached the LVMH subsidiary years ago to explore a partnership to create a product that “reflected her whisky ideal,” according to the brand.
The spirit also reflects Beyoncé’s whisky heritage. It gets its name from her paternal great-grandfather, Davis Hogue. “A farmer and a moonshiner in the American South during Prohibition,” Hogue “stashed whisky bottles in the empty knots of cedar trees for friends and kin to find and enjoy,” and Beyoncé’s discovery of this liquor legacy made her decision to create a whisky brand feel “predestined,” according to a press release.
“I’ve always been drawn to the power and confidence I feel when drinking quality whisky and wanted to invite more people to experience that feeling,” Beyoncé said in a statement. “When I discovered that my great-grandfather had been a moonshine man, it felt like my love for whisky was fated. SirDavis is a way for me to pay homage to him, uniting us through a new shared legacy.”
LVMH Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Bernard calls SirDavis “revelatory” and “exceptional.” “It is also a testament of the unwavering dedication to craftsmanship, heritage and innovation shared by LVMH and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter,” Arnault said.
SirDavis was developed by Master Distiller Dr. Bill Lumsden, who also led the creation of Scotch whisky brands Glenmorangie and Ardbeg. It features a mash bill composed of 51 percent rye and 49 percent malted barley and was made using traditional techniques to arrive at “an elegant mouthfeel and texture reminiscent of Japanese and Scotch whiskies, while retaining the robust and deep flavors typical of classic American rye,” summoning “layers of dark red fruits and spices like clove and cinnamon,” according to the brand.
“The distinctive grain selection and unusual secondary maturation in sherry casks helped us achieve a signature profile completely unique to SirDavis, one of bold sophistication,” Lumsden said.
The whisky has already been awarded Best In Class for American Whiskey from the 2023 SIP Awards, beating more than 100 other whisky brands after having been anonymously submitted prior to its launch. It also received a Gold Medal (with 95 points) in the 2023 New York International Spirits Competition and a 93-point 2023 Ultimate Spirits Challenge rating.
SirDavis’s distinctive, elongated, perfume-evocative bottle design, on which Beyoncé collaborated, features light-catching ribbed glass and a black medallion boasting a bronze horse symbolizing “strength and respect.” It winks at Beyonce’s Texas origins as does the fact that the whisky is “finished, blended and bottled” in Texas. The SirDavis brand is headquartered in Houston, Beyonce’s hometown.
So where can you get your hands on Beyoncé’s SirDavis whisky and decide if you’re drunk in love with it? Retailing for $89 a bottle, SirDavis can now be pre-ordered via SirDavis.com. In September, it will be available at retail stores nationwide, in select airports (LAX/JFK/SFO) and at shops in London, Paris and Tokyo.
“In partnering with Moët Hennessy, we have crafted a delicious American whisky that respects tradition but also empowers people to experience something new and unique in the category,” Beyoncé said. “You can taste it better than I could ever tell you — welcome, SirDavis.”
