What Is McDonaldland? The Chain’s New Meal and Shake Promise To Take You
The pink and blue shake tastes … like a mythical volcano?

Whoa, throwback. McDonald’s is launching a new “signature meal” and “specialty shake” that are all about nostalgia for a long-ago vibe.
Remember those cheesy (in a good way) ’70s TV commercials depicting McDonaldland, a mythical town populated by such colorful characters as Ronald McDonald, Grimace, Hamburglar and Mayor McCheese? Now that surreal spot has inspired a new McDonaldland Meal, centered around a limited-edition Mt. McDonaldland Shake.
Both the meal and the shake will be available August 12.

So what can you expect the shake, which features a combination of “vibrant blue ‘lava’ and pink clouds,” to taste like? McDonald’s is playing it coy — and cute.
For now, the flavor of the Mt. McDonaldland Shake is as mysterious as the land that inspired it. The brand says it features a “secret concoction” that is an “ode” to the volcanic Mt. McDonaldland.
“It’s up to you to discover the surprise flavor,” the chain teases in a press release.
Along with the mysterious shake, the McDonaldland Meal will come with the choice of a Quarter Pounder with Cheese or a 10-piece order of Chicken McNuggets, fries and one of six new collectible souvenir tins, each decorated with a 1970s-era depiction of a beloved McDonaldland character, along with postcards, stickers and other fun items.

“Over the past few years we’ve seen how fans flock to our characters, everyone from Grimace to the Hamburglar. But many, especially the new generation, don’t know that’s just the tip of the iceberg. There’s an entire magical world of McDonaldland filled with characters, places and lore,” Jennifer “JJ” Healan, McDonald’s vice president, U.S., of marketing, brand, content and culture, says in a statement. “And so, for the first time in decades we are taking fans on a trip to McDonaldland with an immersive experience that taps into the past to create the future. It’s a chance for us to give fans a new, modern way to experience this magical world.”
For those too young to recall or too old to remember, for more than 20 years after its 1971 debut, McDonaldland, with its Apple Pie Trees and Hamburger Patches, was depicted not only in ads, but also in games, movies and more. In addition to the new meal, shake and collectible, its current revival will feature limited-edition merch from McDonald’s collabs with Pacsun (sweats, T-shirts, dropping August 12) and Away (luggage tags, bag charms with any purchase at Away retail locations, starting August 18).
Everything comes with a “while supplies last” caveat, so whether you’re a serious collector or just a person with a passion for McDonald’s imagery of the past, you’ll probably want to move as stealthily as the Hamburglar to snag ’em.
