McDonald’s may be known for the burgers, nuggets and fries on its menu, but don’t sleep on those sauces. The chain has occasionally garnered a cult following for some of its little foil-topped cups of condiments, especially limited-edition flavors (remember Szechuan Sauce?). This week, McDonald’s has a chance to add to its growing list of fan-favorite flavors with a new, mysterious Gold Sauce that’s hitting restaurants and Snack Wraps nationwide as of Wednesday, September 3.

What Is McDonald’s Gold Sauce?

Available for a limited time, McDonald’s says its Special Edition Gold Sauce is a creamy take on North Carolina BBQ sauce that’s also “infused with notes of honey, smoke and mustard.” The Gold Sauce is available as both a condiment option on McDonald’s sandwich items, or as a side sauce for dippable items like McCrispy Strips and McNuggets. The brand also says it designed Special Edition Gold Sauce to be paired with chicken, specifically.

What Does McDonald’s Gold Sauce Taste Like?

I got to try Special Edition Gold sauce on four different menu items, and the North Carolina BBQ sauce influence is certainly there, as this zesty (but not spicy) mustard-like sauce offers both creaminess along with a bit of a vinegary punch. Spices like paprika and turmeric also come through, especially in its appropriately golden (the hue, not the metal) color. It’s a bright addition to the dipping sauce lineup, and reminded me of a tangier take on honey mustard when I tried it with the McCrispy Strips. Where it really shined was as a spread on the McCrispy Chicken Sandwich with bacon and pickles, where it cut though the savory bacon and complemented the briny pickles.

What Are McDonald’s Special Edition Gold Sauce Menu Items?

The marquee item with Gold Sauce, per McDonald’s announcement, appears to be the Special Edition Gold Snack Wrap. This is the first limited-edition version of the fan-favorite, tortilla-wrapped chicken tender since it was brought back permanently earlier this year. In this case, the ranch dressing (or spicy sauce) is swapped for Gold Sauce, and wrapped up with lettuce, shredded cheese and a McCrispy chicken strip.

But McDonald’s has more in store for Gold Sauce: Other limited-edition menu items include a Gold McCrispy Sandwich with bacon and pickles, A Gold Deluxe McCrispy Sandwich which also adds lettuce and tomato slices, and finally McDonald’s suggests selecting Gold Sauce as your dip of choice for McCrispy Strips. But, as these things always go, all Special Edition Gold Sauce items are available for a limited time while supplies last.
