Get out your spoon, or straw or French fry … or whatever you use to eat a Frosty, fruit fans. The rumors are true, and it’s berry exciting: Wendy’s is introducing a Strawberry Frosty for a limited time this summer.

The new flavor of Wendy’s thinner-than-ice-cream, thicker-than-a-shake signature frozen dairy dessert debuts today in response to popular demand, appearing on its menu board alongside the original Chocolate Frosty (a Wendy’s staple introduced back in 1969) for a limited time.

The Strawberry Frosty, which was tested in Canada and then Virginia before being introduced nationwide in the U.S., will temporarily replace the Vanilla Frosty (which, even though it seems as if it’s been here forever, was added to menus only in 2006), but fear not, vanilla devotees: The Vanilla Frosty will return in late summer.

Combining the “creamy, delectable texture” familiar to Frosty fans and “the flavor of sweet strawberry” – made with real, fresh strawberry puree – the Strawberry Frosty encapsulates “the taste of summertime,” according to the company.

We had a chance to taste the new Strawberry Frosty ahead of the launch, and it is yummy – cool, smooth, subtly fruity and, yes, delectably creamy, perfectly bridging the gap between a strawberry shake and a strawberry sundae. Just the thing for a hot summer day.

John Li, Wendy’s vice president of culinary innovation, notes that it “adds more nuance” to the Frosty lineup, but doesn’t “mess with what makes a Frosty really good.”

“We’re always listening to our fans and as the most-requested item, it was a no-brainer for us to bring the Strawberry Frosty to the menu this season,” Carl Loredo, Wendy’s chief marketing officer, said in a news release.

Wendy’s recommends pairing the Strawberry Frosty with its Summer Strawberry Chicken Salad, which is returning to the chain’s menu, also for a limited time. The seasonal entree salad features sliced fresh, ripe California-grown strawberries, crispy Applewood smoked bacon and grilled chicken on a bed of crispy lettuce and spring mix, topped with a blend of three Italian cheeses, candied almonds and Champagne vinaigrette.

“The Summer Strawberry Chicken Salad delivers on our promise for fresh, real and flavorful salads” and “brings forward fresh, sweet and nutty notes that deliver a flavor explosion in every bite,” said Li.

As a bonus, from now through July 3, when you order a salad via the Wendy’s app, you can get a free small Fry with your purchase. Of course, you’ll also earn Wendy’s Rewards points when you order via the app this summer — and when you collect 150 points, you can redeem them for a Free Strawberry Frosty.

Yes, the summer’s looking pretty sweet and berry promising.
