National Doughnut Day, the annual holiday that honors those fried pastries we love, is celebrated every year on the first Friday in June. This year, the annual food holiday falls on Friday, June 4. As with similar holidays, as well as National Doughnut Days of years past, it’s become customary for some retailers to give out free food to mark the occasion.
The Salvation Army created National Doughnut Day in 1938 to honor the people who served doughnuts to soldiers in World War I, and now we reap the benefits of those efforts with free goodies each year.
If you love doughnuts and think we can all use a free pastry (or two, or three) after the year we’ve had, scroll down to read a list of chains giving out free doughnuts on June 4.
Dunkin’: This chain may have formally dropped the “Donuts” from its name in 2018, but it still gives out free treats on National Doughnut Day.
This year, customers can enjoy a free classic doughnut of their choice with any beverage purchase, while supplies last at participating Dunkin’ locations. Dunkin’ is also launching limited-edition customizable doughnut-themed fashions as part of its #NationalDonutDay collection, which will be available at 12:00 p.m. EST on Thursday, June 3, exclusively at shopdunkin.com.
Krispy Kreme: The North Carolina-based brand is giving guests a choice of any free doughnut they want on National Doughnut Day, no purchase necessary. What’s more? Krispy Kreme also intends to honor its earlier COVID-19 vaccination promo, which stipulated that customers could get a free Original Glazed doughnut if they showed a valid vaccination card. In other words, Krispy Kreme fans have a chance to score two free doughnuts this year.
Duck Donuts: The family-run chain is offering all in-store customers a bare, cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar doughnut on the house.
La Mars: The Denver-based chain launched a Doughnut Sweepstakes, with chances to win free doughnuts, for all customers on May 30. On June 4, the brand is also giving two free doughnuts to "community heroes."
Shipley Do-Nuts: Customers can get a free glazed doughnut with any purchase between 5 A.M. and 12 P.M.
Stan’s Donuts & Coffee: The Illinois chain, which has several locations in Chicago, is offering customers a free glazed doughnut on June 4.
Tiffany’s Bakery: The first 200 customers at the Philadelphia doughnut shop will receive a free DOYO on June 4. The DOYO is made in a steam oven, giving it a moist and tender profile that’s different from traditional doughnuts. Compared to a fried doughnut, the DOYO has a much better and “cleaner” flavor, and with as many as 25 percent fewer calories and as much as 50 percent less fat.
