It’s no secret that Diet Coke fans take their favorite soft drink very seriously. They’ll zhuzh it up with the right ice, the perfect glass and perhaps themed accessories. But real ones know the key to an excellent Diet Coke is adding lime. Citrus is the bright, zingy complement a sweet, bubbly soda needs.

A lime-flavored Diet Coke just makes sense, and it was a popular product until 2018, when it was replaced by Diet Coke Ginger Lime. (That one lasted until 2020.) Fans have been asking for its return ever since. Lucky for them, they’re about to get their wish.

What was the original Diet Coke Lime?

Diet Coke Lime was “a breakout favorite when it first launched” in 2004, the brand says in a press release. It tasted exactly how it sounds: like a classic Diet Coke with a “zesty lime twist.” Fans loved it.

“The perfect diet soda already exists,” a Reddit user posted in 2016. “It’s called ‘Diet Coke with Lime.’”

The flavor was discontinued in 2018. It remained an option in Coca-Cola Freestyle machines — it’s still available today — but people miss the canned and bottled stuff.

“Diet coke w lime is like a time transport to being young,” a Reddit user commented last year.

What is the new Retro Diet Coke Lime?

The new version of the drink, Retro Diet Coke Lime, comes in old-school packaging meant to be “collectible” and to stand out from contemporary branding. The neon green text and accents are, of course, a nod to its bright, fruity flavor.

“It’s designed to spark excitement among longtime loyalists while introducing younger shoppers to the bold, refreshing twist,” the brand says.

As the revamped name suggests, Retro Diet Coke Lime is tapping into customers’ growing nostalgia for the early 2000s. This release follows the limited-time launch of Retro Diet Cherry Coke earlier this year, which the brand calls a “runaway success” in a press release.

How can you buy Retro Diet Coke Lime?

You can find Diet Coke Lime at retailers nationwide beginning on October 6. It’ll be sold in 12-packs of cans and single 20-ounce bottles for a limited time.

But, if you can’t get enough of the taste, you’ll still be able to buy the fountain version from Coca-Cola Freestyle machines. Or, do as the pros do: Add a packet of True Lime powder to your regular Diet Coke. (You’re welcome.)
