A sign that summer is on its way: The drink we once called “sunshine in a can” is heading back to stores.
Dr Pepper Creamy Coconut, which debuted for a limited time in April 2024, is making the return its fans have been clamoring for. Alas, its time among us will again be as short-lived as a beach-day sand castle.
What is Dr Pepper Creamy Coconut?
Absent from shelves for nearly two years after a brief, crowd-pleasing period of availability, Dr Pepper Creamy Coconut “brings together the perfect combination of the original 23 Dr Pepper flavors with layers of tropical coconut flavor and a delicious, creamy finish,” the brand told Food Network ahead of its original 2024 launch.
It added that the drink was intended to be enjoyed on a hot summer day, delivering a “refreshing, summery coconut taste,” and would be “the only coconut-cream-flavored dark soda on the market.” It is available in both regular and zero sugar varieties.
What does Dr Pepper Creamy Coconut taste like?
Back when the flavor was first introduced, I fretted that the soda would taste like sunscreen, but, happily, it did not. It’s Dr Pepper’s signature taste with an added hint of coconut — creamy, layered and not too sweet.
I was not then, and am not now, the flavor’s only fan.
How are people responding to Dr Pepper Creamy Coconut’s return?
People are psyched. Dr Pepper says between January and March of this year alone, Dr Pepper Creamy Coconut had collected almost 5,000 mentions and more than 6.3 million “engagements” on social media. 97% of the online conversation was people calling for the flavor’s return or asking that Dr Pepper make it permanent, the brand says.
News of its return has been predictably positive.
“YESSSS MY FAVE IS COMING BACK,” wrote one Instagram commenter.
“i'll be buying as much as I can. Best soda I ever had,” said another.
“This is the best day of my entire life,” a third declared.
Where and when can you buy Dr Pepper Creamy Coconut?
Both Classic and Zero Sugar Dr Pepper Creamy Coconut are now available nationwide at retailers including Amazon, Kroger, Target and Walmart, among others, for a limited time — now through July 31. The beverages come in 12-ounce cans and 12-packs.
