Looking for a fun throwback snack? German recipe developer @tinka.video has just the thing. She put together two beloved childhood treats — frozen grapes and Fruit Roll-Ups — and the result is sweet-and-sour perfection. Plus, it’s super simple.
All you have to do is thread green grapes onto skewers, wrap them up in Fruit Roll-Ups, then freeze until solid. For the finishing touch, squeeze on some fresh lime juice. These skewers have the same look and crunch of tanghulu, but they’re much easier to make at home — no boiling sugar required.
For fans of sweet-and-savory combinations, Tinka also developed a spicy version of the skewers. The recipe is similar, but she drizzles the grapes with chamoy and dips them in chili powder before adding the Fruit Roll-Up. (She also leaves out the lime juice.)
Tinka’s recipes are the latest addition to a long line of frozen social media trends. A few years ago, TikTok creators made a challenge out of freezing honey in plastic water bottles, then squeezing it out and eating it directly (and, of course, consuming way more sugar than anyone should in one sitting). And last summer, Frankie Gaw popularized shaved fruit ice, and we couldn’t resist developing our own version. This summer, people on TikTok started making “frozen sour candy grapes” by coating grapes in lime or lemon juice and Jell-O powder, then freezing.
While some of these trends are better than others, it’s clear that there’s so much creativity to be had with fruity, frozen desserts. If they remind us of the treats we loved growing up, even better.
