Oreo Changed Its Cakesters, So I Tried Them
The brand says they're even softer than before — but how big is the difference?

Oreo is a company that’s always evolving. The century-old brand consistently stocks shelves with items that appeal to both adventurous and traditional Oreo lovers, from wacky, limited-edition flavors like Coca-Cola Oreos to permanent additions like Chocolate Creme Minis.
However, there’s one variety of Oreos that’s had an up-and-down trajectory: Cakesters. And now, there’s a new chapter in Oreo Cakester history.
What are Oreo Cakesters?
Cakesters are Oreo’s take on a whoopie pie, featuring two chocolate snack cakes with vanilla creme in the middle. The brand first released Cakesters back in 2007, pulled them from shelves in 2012, and then announced their triumphant return in 2022. It was around the year of its return that I first tried a Cakester, and from that first luscious bite, wondered: “Where has this been all my life?”
What are the new Oreo Cakesters?
Cakester lovers, you’ll breathe a sigh of relief knowing that the snack cakes aren’t leaving us again. However, in the spirit of evolution, they’ve been reformulated with a new recipe that Oreo says makes them even softer than before.
“It's the Oreo experience you love, but reimagined, so you can have your cake (and cookie!) too. Whether you're on the move or relaxing with an afternoon treat, Oreo Cakesters are a great way to make every snacking moment more playful,” the brand shared in a statement to Food Network.
Are the new Oreo Cakesters actually softer than the original?
It’s hard to tell. Without the old Cakesters available for a side-by-side comparison, the changes in the updated formula are subtle enough that I couldn’t say either way definitively. Perhaps diehard Cakesters lovers will be able to notice a difference, but for someone like me who only has them on occasion, I doubt you will. On the plus side, anyone worried about the new recipe will rest assured that the snack cakes still taste like what you know and love.

The reformulated Oreo Cakesters are available nationwide wherever Oreos are sold. You can grab them in Original, Golden or Double Chocolate in three different-sized packs.
