Vacations are a big deal for the Fieris: They love exploring new places, cuisines and cultures—and they love just having some downtime as a family. Guy and his wife Lori, along with their sons Hunter, 26, and Ryder, 17, and Guy's nephew Jules, 23, have journeyed far and wide (check out the photo album!) and they've learned a few things about successful group travel along the way. We asked Guy and his boys to share their top tips for making sure everyone has a great trip.

Take Good Snacks

"Keep yourself from getting hangry—you gotta have snacks!" says Guy, who counts Corn Nuts as a personal fave. The Fieris bring jerky and pretzels too. "We're always either stealing each other's food...or hiding it," says Hunter.

Have Some Bad-Weather Backup

The Fieris are a dominos family. "Sometimes, we'll break out two sets and play with 15 of us," says Hunter. The musical accompaniment: "We listen to a lot of country, lots of old-school rock," says Guy.

Go Ahead and Overpack!

It's a running family joke that Jules's suitcase is always the largest one on trips, after Lori's. "I like to have options," he says. "The benefit is always looking stylish!"

Divide and Conquer

"Usually, we go on adventures on vacation," says Jules. And if his aunt Lori and grandma Mimi don't want to come, "they'll be by the pool." On the family trip to Hawaii, the boys went scuba diving, surfing and spearfishing.

Create a Fun Tradition

Anyone who visits the family cabin at Ruth Lake for the first time has to perform at the evening campfire. "It could be a song you make up, a joke or a story," Jules says. One of Ryder's favorite memories: We had a kids family reunion and my dad was teaching everyone how to cook!"

Decide on Dinner Early

To avoid any "where-should-we-eat" evening drama, the Fieris plan ahead. "The first thing we talk about every morning is what we're doing for dinner," says Hunter. "And we all have pretty good palates!"

Unplug!

At Ruth Lake, the Fieris enforce a no-phone zone so everyone can be present. The custom started before the house got good reception—but even after it did, the rule stuck. "You'd be on dish duty if you were caught on your phone," says Jules.

Start a Book Club

Before each trip, Guy and Hunter choose the same book to read. They'll tackle a few chapters on the flight, then chat about them. "Sometimes we'll turn it into a competition to see who can finish first," says Hunter.
