Beer and tortilla chips are a go-to Game Day snack combo that has stood the test of time – a true tailgating staple. Now two California companies have teamed up to roll the beloved beverage and snack into one, creating what they hope will become a new tradition for these unusual “homegating” times: They’re calling it “the world’s first tortilla chip beer.”
Tortilla Chip Lager, a joint effort from Taco Works tortilla chips and Tio Rodrigo Craft Beer Micheladas, is a light beer featuring “hints of lime zest” made by brewers using 400 pounds of steaming, hot-from-the-oven tortilla chips. The limited-time only “special release” brew, which launches on January 28 and comes in a cheery orange and yellow Taco Works-branded can, is designed to be enjoyed while watching sports in front of the TV.
“Everyone's been going a bit stir-crazy lately so we wanted to have some fun and shake things up,” Steve Courier, Tio Rodrigo’s head brewer, said in a news release. “Why not have your chips and drink them too?”
Why not? Indeed. Although this round will be available only in California — at select retailers and online for home delivery (it comes with a complimentary bag of chips!) — we’re holding out hope for a broader rollout by the time the next big game comes around. Because even when things get back to normal — and we’re all crowding into stadiums, sports bars and parties — a taste of the unusual will be welcome.
And we’re not the only ones who are into it.
“My two favorite things in one can... 🍺 🌮,” wrote one Instagram commenter.
“Need this!” another chimed in.
Yeah, it really does sound like all that and a bag of chips.
