Forget the box! There’s never enough, and the flavors when you make the real thing are better. Egg noodles are the perfect base for this rich gravy studded with beef sirloin cubes, but mashed potatoes are a great vessel as well. The hint of fresh thyme and horseradish make this stand out from classic beef stroganoff. It’s creamy and unctuous with a bit of zip, and even the parsley garnish puts in work with a final fresh note. It’s the small things that matter here.

Sometimes the fastest meal starts in the refrigerator. I like to keep ingredients there that can turn an hourlong preparation into simply minutes. Dumplings have earned their space in my freezer due to the straight-to-the-heat cooking and versatility. They are great steamed, pan-fried and served with a dipping sauce, or steamed and added to various broths or soups, like this recipe.

I love to serve familiar things with a twist – it’s an easy way to introduce something new to guests and family. Familiar words and flavors are comforting even if they arrive in a different vessel. This time it’s a bowl instead of a sandwich. A Reuben sandwich is long overdue when it comes to turning it into a soup. It just makes sense. It’s easy to transform its parts into a new way to enjoy this classic sandwich of corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and rye bread. And wait until you taste my twist on Russian dressing.

Thanksgiving is a holiday that can put your planning and timing skills to the test. With so many dishes traditionally required, a kitchen with just one oven needs a plan. Your best bet is to prepare what you can beforehand. One of the smarter dishes to cook one to two days before is the stuffing/dressing. Let’s not fuss over the title, because one thing we can agree on is it’s better on the second day and easier to store if you cut it down to size for storage in the refrigerator, thus making room for that big bird and a ham if you so choose. This also freezes well in serving-sized cubes.

These puffs take a store-bought shortcut and turn it into golden, crisp-on-the-outside and fluffy inside potato puffs that are great for a crowd (and better still, the dough can be made a day in advance). Perfect fresh from the fryer or at room temperature, and served with or without a dipping sauce, these potato puffs are basically handheld mashed potatoes with a hint of smokiness from the paprika and a light cheesy note from the Parmesan.

I have fun memories of going to the official Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany with my family when I was a kid. Of course, I couldn’t partake of the beer, but I loved the German word for Munich, or München. It sounded very close to the English word "munchin’" and that’s exactly what we did as a family; we munched on every bite we could! The star of German food is bratwurst and potatoes with a heavy dose of all cabbages. The mustard finishing drizzle is great on many roasted vegetables, like cauliflower, broccoli and asparagus. This cheat sheet is a fast way for me to take a trip back in time, with a few updated flavors. And now, because I can, I have this with a beer.

There’s nothing like a yeasty donut, fresh from the fryer. They are substantial, but chewy and light. This recipe will make you feel like opening your own donut shop. Easy to prepare and coat, the donuts are actually fine alone, thanks to the sugar, vanilla and the pinch of salt in the dough. They are perfectly balanced and not too sweet. Feel free to eat them with no coating, but my favorite donut when making them or at a bakery is the sugar donut: The granules all over my clothes, fingers and face make me feel like a kid.

I love a good martini. This recipe has bits of all my favorite parts from martinis I’ve had around the world and even here at work. Martha Stewart visited The Kitchen in our early years and shared her favorite vodka; I tried it, and it became one of my favorites as well. If I can’t find her suggestion, I ask for Tito’s vodka, made in Texas. If you’re making a vodka martini, you value a spirit that just comes in and does the work—no offensive flavors or scents. For a dirty martini, the amount of olive juice is up to the drinker, but I tend to be heavy-handed. Do as you like, but this is my perfect martini, with 4 perfectly stuffed olives.

I often think traditional garlic bread is too crispy and toasted; it tears the roof of your mouth and leaves your gums numb. I’m Team Texture, so I don’t mind a bit of crunch, but I also love a tender piece of bread, flavored with butter and garlic but still flexible enough to tear, push around, and sop up tasty bits left in the plate or bowl of food it accompanies. This recipe is the best of both of those worlds with a switch to sourdough bread that just makes sense; it’s tangy and stands out, but it’s also cushy and has a crisp exterior. The smear of a garlicky compound butter on each piece guarded by the aluminum foil ensures that they are tender, but not dried out. Team Texture, check in!

One of my favorite spreads tastes even better as a cookie! Cookie butter is made from spice cookies also known as "speculoos" and has a flavor that will remind you of a cross between a cinnamon graham cracker and a ginger snap. Sometimes I just eat it by itself with a fresh banana, just like peanut butter. These cookies are perfect for gifting; they stay fresh in an airtight container for a week. An easy trick for keeping them tender is adding half a slice of fresh bread to the container. Thank me later.

This recipe is a quick and easy, multipurpose way to make your ahi tuna for an amazing poke. I like to turn it into a poke bowl with a spring mixture of baby lettuces, pickled ginger, seaweed salad, diced mango, cilantro and sometimes rice or quinoa, but you can also use it to fill lettuce wraps. Still, there’s nothing like fresh tuna poke served alone with plantain chips as a snack or appetizer. This is how I’ve had it on vacation, and I love it, because it’s well-balanced with a sweet, salty and fiery bite from the ginger and spicy honey.

One of my favorite things to order for delivery from a Greek restaurant is a gyro salad. It has all the things you want inside a gyro sandwich, but in salad form. It usually comes with two warm pitas on the side, so I love to make my own gyro from all the elements. This is a dip that gives me all those vibes and more. It’s great with pita chips or as an easy way to serve gyros to a group without having several topping bowls. Just have warm pita on the side and a spoon to scoop the dip. Sometimes, I serve it this way with crisp, shredded lettuce in a bowl on the side.

I got this sweet treat idea from a social media post. I had no idea just how simple it was to bloom chia seeds, and how quickly it happens. In this recipe, I use rich and creamy oat milk. I make this the night before and have it for breakfast, or I decide before dinner that I’d like it as a healthy dessert and make it then, knowing the chia seeds will soak up the liquid and become “pudding” in just a few hours. I often keep chia seed pudding in the refrigerator for up to a week and enjoy it by itself or layered with other tasty ingredients. The pudding is lightly sweetened and has a fun popping texture that will remind you of poppy or pomegranate seeds.
