1/2 ounce absinthe

2 1/2 ounces rye or bourbon

1 teaspoon sugar

6 dashes orange or Peychaud's bitters

2 dashes Angostura bitters

Lemon peel, for serving


  1. Add the absinthe to a rocks glass and swirl around to coat the glass.
  2. Add ice to a cocktail shaker. Add the rye, sugar, orange or Peychaud bitters and Angostura bitters and shake it all up. 
  3. Pour out the absinthe from the glass (or drink it if you don't want to waste it). Add ice cubes, strain the cocktail over the ice and serve with a lemon peel.
