Pronunciation: [tohs-TOH-nays]

Green 1/2-inch-thick plantain slices (banana) that have been soaked in cold adobo-flavored water before being deep-fried. After cooling, the slices are flattened slightly and fried again until crisp. Popular in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, tostones are served as a side dish.
